Puzzle by Matt Ginsberg, edited by Will Shortz
THE COVERS OF THIS BOOK ARE TOO FAR APART (19A. Scathing review attributed to Ambrose Bierce, Part 1; 31A. Review, part 2; 48A. Review, part 3) is the main entry of this Saturday crossword. Ambrose Bierce is the author of hundreds of quotable quotes, so with no other clue except the crosswords crossings, the puzzle can be a grim solve, especially for one finding clueless quotations anathematic.
Upstaging the long quotation are two 15-letter across entries -- STILLER AND MEARA (17A. They appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show” 36 times) and GREENHOUSE GASES (50A. “Hot” political topic).
A few more links -- TARHEELS; MR BONES; ANTHEM; OPERAS; UNPAID; BOARS; CHAKA; USPS (9A. Org. that trademarked “Pony Express” in 2006).
Here‘s a cover story for the ages...
