Hidden delicatessen sandwich names were utilized in a New York Times puzzle a year ago almost to the day, and here they are again. ORGANGRINDER (20A. Cranky street performer?); GERMANSUB (36A. U-boat); SANDWEDGE (41A. Heaviest iron in a golfer’s bag); and ROMANTICHERO (50A. Don Juan, e.g.).
The
Tuesday, September 11, 2007 crossword by Christina Houlihan Kelly had the same four sandwich types contained in the entries of SANDWEDGE (16A Golf club used in a bunker); MEATGRINDER (22A Butcher’s device); AMERICANSUB (44A U.S.S. Nautilus, for one); and SUPERHERO (55A Spider-Man or the Green Lantern). Incidentally, I notice that the official bloggers of The New York Times point out that the daily puzzles in this week's Times will be/were all constructed by teenagers -- I don’t know if Ms. Kelly is a teenager, but her puzzle is getting a second serving this week.
